M10 THE GRAPHITE MINE

On Carrum Hill, near Burdle Burcombe, the English Graphite Extraction Co. has scarred the landscape with a number of mines. At the pithead of one of the workings Liriope, a standard gauge locomotive of the Plumbury Bagotte and Vobley Mere Railway, shunts the special graphite wagons beneath the loading point. Narrow gauge engines scuttle about removing waste and delivering fuel for the steam winding engine. The engineman keeps an eye on the wire rope, knowing that when the large knot which is visible reaches the winch drum, then the wagon being hauled from the depths will have reached the top of the track.
