M17 THE WATER-POWERED TURNTABLE - Chervil Valley Railway, Whimshire

The CVR runs from Woodruff Junction to Castle Chervil, before meandering another mile or so to terminate near the tiny hamlet of Vetchling Chervil. Here a unique turntable has been installed to turn the locomotives, using recycled parts from an abandoned watermill plus some additions cobbled together in the company workshops. Staff tip buckets of water from a dipping tank to set the waterwheel in motion, while liquid is sucked from the sump beneath the wheel and carried back up to the water tanks by the red hand pump. The stationmaster is ready to assist by giving the contraption a shove with his foot, many times probably.
