The Titfield Thunderbolt Bookshop

Saturday 25th February 2012

Quite a busy day in the shop today, the sun has been shining and there are definitely more people out and about. Model Railway Journal 213 is to hand, a classic issue featuring Iain Rice and with a distinctly "West Country" atmosphere - see the MRJ pages for full details.

I have also just taken delivery of the very excellent "Branch Line Video" DVDs, all of the West Country related titles including the "cab ride" series. I will hopefully get these added to the database and website over the next week and look forward to seeing how they sell in the shop. I always liked their documentary style, with its intelligent mixture of good quality archive film footage, stills and the contemporary scene when relevant. Thank you very much to Michael Welch for facilitating this extension of my stock with Ian Heys.

Other new books this week have included a new paperback edition of "Brunel's Royal Albert Bridge" from Twelveheads at £19.50, two modestly priced but good Scottish books (see below), M&GNR in Colour part 4 at £7.95 and the new North Cornwall "District Controllers View" from Xpress is also in at £14.95.

Charity shops

We have rather a good one here in Larkhall (no train books, obviously) and a customer alerted me to a rather wonderful framed picture which I just had to buy for the shop, does anyone recognise themselves in this picture?

Looks to be the mid 1950s and early Triang to me, although I'm intrigued by the private owner wagons - Hamblings or Merco maybe?

A couple of new Scottish themed books in the shop this week, I especially like this one, see "whats new" for further details Michael Portillo is still on our screens travelling by rail, making this little reprint of Bradshaw an appealing companion to an evenings viewing. Current Bath Mayor and all round good egg Bryan Chalker has arranged a heritage event on Saturday April the 9th, not sure quite what's going to be there yet but here's the poster:

That's it for now, just got time to make another cup of tea and pen a few more book descriptions before time for home and tea - oh and I mustn't forget to back up the database too.....
