M5 CROSSING VOBLEY MERE

The Whiminster & Whimchester Direct Railway needed to build a long bridge across Vobley Mere in order to link the two places in its title. An impoverished company from the start, the railway engaged a little-known local engineer to design a lightweight structure which would be inexpensive yet capable of supporting a passing train at low speeds. That was the theory, which sadly failed to live up to expectations when put into practice. The quarter mile length of bridge that was constructed collapsed beneath the weight of a contractor's engine, the Company ran out of money and Vobley Mere remains unbridged to this day!
