This sea of rusting tin roofs is in fact the headquarters of the PB&VMR with its break of gauge. Passengers travelling beyond here need to change trains and a 3ft gauge train awaits custom from an expected standard gauge arrival. The company abandoned plans to convert the entire line to standard gauge and build a decent station, so these inconvenient 'temporary' facilities were retained instead. The eyesore on the left is the graphite lubricant works, while the locomotive shed with its rudimentary repair shops, catering for both gauges, and the goods interchange yard complete the picture.
