Rails to Achill

Jonathan Beaumont    [Publisher:  Oakwood  2002]    Softback    160 pages

A delightful account of a broad gauge line built under the auspices of the Lght Railways act, which succumbed to road competition as early as 1937. A highly scenic route in County Mayo, its eastern origin at Westport is still connected by rail whilst most of the line's route and structures remain intact. The redoubtable H.C. Casserley visited the line and took a series of excellent photographs, I particularly like his atmosperic photograph of a train at Achill, a scene with no sign of life beyond his luggage in the foreground.
