The Titfield Thunderbolt Bookshop

Established in September of 1992, the "Titfield Thunderbolt" is an independent bookselling business owned and run by Simon Castens.

Situated in one of the few remaining relatively "normal" parts of Bath, the shop is situated in Larkhall a compact suburb on the east side of the City, within easy reach of the A4 and M4. There is free on street parking, while the shop is also within two minutes walk of bus stops on two major bus routes into and out of the city. The nearby Kennet and Avon Canal makes for a very pleasant walking route in and out of the city too.

Other facilities in Larkhall include Gerald Rich's excellent greengrocery now branded the "Larkhall Farm shop", Andy Lamont's "Goodies", a deservedly busy delicatessen, "Larkhall Butchers" an independent business of some quality, a decent branch of the Coop, Vanessa's hairdressers, a handy pharmacy, slightly crazy Frenchman Patrick with his brilliant "Ma Cuisine", a still open Post Office in convenience store "McColls", a good Indian, decent Chinese and rumoured to be opening soon, a more than competent fish and chip shop.

Oh, and wonder of wonders, there is a working and clean public convenience, next to the quirkily stylish gift shop "Leak". And last but by no means least, "The Larkhall Inn", an historic public house which serves a very decent pint of Courage "Best" amongst other things, has a lovely walled garden attached and which is from any perspective a highly singular establishment. It is that vanishingly rare thing, a pub like they used to be and surely bound to suffer some sort of "improvement" in the not too distant future?

Back to business, in 2015, the Wild Swan Books publishing business developed by the highly talented Paul Karau was added to the activites in Larkhall. The demands and opportunities that this presented led to revisions to the shop opening hours, with the decision being made in 2019 to focus shop opening hours on to Fridays only. This is purely to allow more time and effort to be put into the publishing side of the business and Wild Swan books. The whole business still otherwise operates from the premises and all other activities such as mail order selling continue just as before.
